Supervisory Recreation Assistant (Lifeguard)

The Supervisory Recreation Assistant (Lifeguard) position serves as the Head Lifeguard at one of the two protected beach units, taking responsibility for the operation of the protected beach, the safety of the visitors and supervision of up to seven lifeguards on a daily basis. The Supervisory Recreation Assistant (Lifeguard) is responsible for organization, planning and management of the district beach operation. Performs lifeguard services during assigned tours of duty, including search and rescue, lifesaving, preventive lifeguarding and providing appropriate care to injured and ill visitors. The Supervisory Recreation Assistant (Lifeguard) is required to complete daily in-service physical training consisting of soft sand running and ocean swimming. The Supervisory Recreation Assistant (Lifeguard) ensures that district staff completes daily in-service training and assigns EMS training drills and rescue training drills to subordinates. The Supervisory Recreation Assistant (Lifeguard) prepares rescue reports and maintains records, and ensures that the district staff follows procedures consistent with park policies. Assateague Island National Seashore is located on the eastern coast of Maryland and Virginia, approximately 130 miles east of Washington, DC. The area is largely rural, with numerous small towns and the seaside resorts of Ocean City, MD and Chincoteague, VA nearby. Complete shopping and medical services are available as are public and private schools. The small city of Salisbury, MD is about 30 miles west of the headquarters area and has shopping centers, a university and a large hospital. These positions are responsible for responding to emergency water related calls in and outside of the protected beach zones. The lifeguards are the initial and primary responders for water related emergencies and for injured or ill park visitors. Due to the critical nature of this position and the impact on visitor health and safety, a CPR and an Emergency Medical Responder certification is required for this position. The GS-06 candidate must be ready to help train others in Emergency medical response starting on their EOD. The positions are responsible for training staff in ocean/surf lifeguard skills starting on their EOD. Ocean/Surf Lifeguard Experience is required. Candidates who do not meet this requirement by close of this announcement will receive no further consideration for this position. - AND - To qualify for this position at the GS-06 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
Experience:
At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as, but not limited to:
Provide overall supervision for a staff of Recreation Assistants (Lifeguard) that may include subordinate Lead Recreation Assistants (Lifeguard) who are responsible for patrolling and providing lifesaving services to the public at a pool or beach facility, perform the duties and responsibilities of a Recreation Assistant (Lifeguard), that includes patrolling and providing lifesaving services to the public at a pool or beach facility, develop and conduct lifeguard and lifesaving training for a staff of Recreation Assistants (Lifeguard), managing a pool or beach facility that includes a staff of lifeguards. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION:
Successful completion of at least one full year of graduate level education at an accredited school in a field directly related to this position and that demonstrates that you possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work of this Supervisory Recreation Assistant position. Examples of coursework in a field directly related to this Supervisory Recreation Assistant position may include, but not limited to, Sports and Recreation Management, Sports and Recreation Studies, Coaching, Sport, Recreation and Fitness Administration, etc. You must include transcripts. Experience:
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as varies.
