Recreation Assistant (Lifeguard)

The Recreation Assistant (Lifeguard) performs lifeguard services during assigned tours of duty, including search and rescue, lifesaving and preventive lifeguarding. The Recreation Assistant (Lifeguard) will supervise and protect visitors at an ocean lifeguarded beach, including compliance with rules and regulations, assisting visitors, and providing emergency medical services. Inspects and is responsible for the condition and storage of equipment assigned. Recreation Assistants (Lifeguard) are required to complete daily in-service training including soft sand running and ocean swimming. Additional workouts, EMS training drills and rescue training drills are assigned at the discretion of supervisor. Prepares rescue reports and maintains records as necessary. Procedures consistent with park policies and protected beach operations are followed. Position Location:
Assateague Island National Seashore is located on the eastern coast of Maryland and Virginia, approximately 130 miles east of Washington, DC. The area is largely rural, with numerous small towns and the seaside resorts of Ocean City, MD and Chincoteague, VA nearby. Complete shopping and medical services are available as are public and private schools. The small city of Salisbury, MD is about 30 miles west of the headquarters area and has shopping centers, a university and a large hospital. Summers are hot and humid, with high temperatures commonly in the 90s. Winters are mild with little snow and daytime temperatures usually above freezing. Please visit https:

Experience:
Have at least six months of general experience that demonstrates my ability to perform the work of the position such as, but not limited to, dealing with the public, maintaining supplies/equipment and following oral and or written instructions, etc., AND have six months of specialized experience performing lifeguard duties (also, developing and administering a swimming program; serving as a swim instructor). You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION:
Successful completion of at least two years of study above the high school level that included at least 12 semester hours in courses related to recreation (e.g., basic psychology, group dynamics, physical education, arts and crafts, etc.). You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. You must include transcripts. Volunteer
Experience:
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as varies.
Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
