This position(s) is a full-time TEMPORARY appointment, not-to-exceed 1039 hours. The appointment is expected to provide full-time, 40 hours per week employment. Appointments may be terminated at any time, may be extended, or work schedules may be changed to part-time depending on funding and work availability.

Primary Duties of the GS-05: As a field technician for avian wildlife management programs, the incumbent will work under permanent park staff to carry out field activities including the control and enhancement of wildlife populations, pest species management, threatened species management, population inventory and assessment, habitat restoration and threat mitigation. The primary focus of this position will be related to a breeding population of threatened shorebirds. The technician will collect field observation data for resource monitoring programs evaluating terrestrial wildlife populations, habitat dynamics, ecological processes, and public recreation issues. They serve as an integral part of an interagency team of monitors and also work independently to accomplish team goals. The program relies on skills including wildlife population sampling design, breeding bird behavior recognition, excellent sight, hearing and mobility in a coastal environment, the use of optical equipment, construction of public use closures and wildlife control structures, techniques to manage or control problem species, the use of personal computers and GPS equipment, the use and maintenance of off road trucks. Incumbent will be required to operate an off-road vehicle.

Physical Demands and Work Environment: The work requires physical exertion such as regular and recurring walking, hiking, or climbing over wet, rough or uneven surfaces; bending, crouching, stooping, lifting or reaching to observe, collect, or record field data. Heavy items (e.g. equipment and packs up to 50 pounds) must be lifted and carried on a routine basis. The work is performed in an office or outdoors. The work performed involves regular and recurring exposure to extreme weather conditions and terrain, poisonous plants, biting insects, and wild animals.
Position Location: Assateague Island National Seashore is located on the Atlantic coast of Maryland and Virginia, approximately 130 miles east of Washington, DC. The area is largely rural, with numerous small towns and the seaside resorts of Ocean City, MD and Chincoteague, VA nearby. Complete shopping and medical services are available, as are public and private schools. The small city of Salisbury, MD is about 30 miles west of the headquarters area and has shopping centers, a university and a large hospital. Summers are hot and humid, with high temperatures commonly in the 90's. Winters are mild with little snow and daytime temperatures usually above freezing.

_For the GS-05 grade level:_ SPECIALIZED
Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level of the federal service. For this position, specialized experience is experience that provides the particular knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies to successfully perform the duties of the position. Examples of such experience for this grade level includes assisting higher level technicians/biologists in conducting wildlife surveys and assembling basic information on wildlife populations such as habitat use; performing routine and recurring testing of collected biological samples; participating in the capture of wildlife to apply visual and radio tags; and assisting higher level specialists in the preparation of reports. Experience: Successful completion of four years of education above high school (120 semester hours or 180 quarter hours) leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours of course work in a related field of scientific or technical study, such as in biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, ornithology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, mathematics, wildlife, wildlife management or other directly related subject matter. At least 6 semester hours of this coursework must have been in subjects that were directly related to the work of this position (biology, ornithology, wildlife management, wildlife biology or other related topics). _OR_ : AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF QUALIFYING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE AS DESCRIBED ABOVE.
_For the GS-06 grade level:_ SPECIALIZED
Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level of the federal service. For this position, specialized experience is experience that provides the particular knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies to successfully perform the duties of the position. Examples of such experience for this grade level includes implementing wildlife survey projects; assembling information on wildlife populations such as seasonal movement and harvest characteristics; collecting data on condition of forage, range, and streams and providing results to higher level specialists for analyses; and using standard statistical methods and procedures to test field data. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
